Has anyone ever experimented with this? I read somewhere about a guy running 2 speakers in a smaller 4x12 cab, and it having a "de-tuned" quality. Anyone else ever try it?

I'm wondering what a smaller 4x12 (like a Marshall 8412) with 2 higher powered drivers (leave the other 2 holes open..maybe cover one of them, or cover one & out a port like a bass cab has where the speakers used to be) would sound like with a smaller wattage head???

I have that Bass 12 combo (that can be pushed with a tube o.d. pedal) that Im thinking about putting in a head box. (have Dad make me a plexi-looking enclosure for it. Something a bit smaller than a small box 50 watt Marshall head box. It'd kinda look like a miniature Marshall Major "Pig"... the had really small front panels on them)

I think that guy is bullshitting a bit. I've used cabs like that before. Sound doesn't change much, other than what is to be expected. If you find a crazy method though, lemmy know.

Genz Benz G-flex cab is sorta like that. It's a ported oversized 2x12 cab. They are supposed to sound pretty huge for a 2x12.

Fixin to try it out with the Marshall Mode Four MF280B. Just had 2 Eminence Delta 12 LF 8 ohm 12"s come in.

Finally got around to this experiment. sucess.

I put 2 emminence delta 12 LF's (bass amp speakers) in my Marshall MF280B cab. I blocked the other 2 speaker holes off with these round things I found at the garden center at lowes. They're particle board on one side, and cork on the other side (like the gasket material on the front of a speaker. These work great for plugging speaker holes & were only a buck a piece.

The 2x12's in the 4x12 with the extra air space sounded HUGE. It was louder than my 4x12 with Mesa black shadows. Really nice & tight & not too boomy. Seemed to be tighter & bigger sounding than a standard sized 2x12.

If yall get the chance, try out emminence speakers. They have LOTS of different speakers & are cheaper than celestion. They make alot of higher powered 12's for PA's & bass cabs too. You can usually find em used for next to nothing. Not as spikey & bright as alot of celestions are. Dark, but not muddy. REALLY sweet brittish-like mids

Seriously? I just don't get how this works. Maybe it's blocking the holes that does it. Makes no sense to me, but then again I'm not scientist.

it resonates more. think of the difference between a ukulele and a real acoustic.
probably allot less phase cancellation as well.

nice, at first I was pretty sure this is bullshit.

I think it's just the extra air space in the cab.

Eventually I'll pt 2 more drivers in the MF cab. Im gonna have Dad build me a 2x12 thats about 10" taller than a normal sized 2x12 & put those Eminences in it.

When the MF cab has 4x12's in it, Im gonna try putting ports in the back panel, like a bass or P/A cab has & see what thats like. Old HIWATT 4x12's had ports in em for those old Fane speakers. old HIWATTS are fuckin' beasts for cabinets.

Speakin of the old man building shit for me, He's gonna build me an Orange style 4x12, but an extra 3-6 inches taller. 8)

if you're building you own cab it might be cool to try and "tune" it, make it's depth in the length of the of where your guitar is tuned to.
egg: if you're tuned to c, you can use the 5th octave of c, 523.25hz, which is 65.9 cm or 26.36 inch.
I'm not sure what will be the outcome when you playing off the scale but it will make the notes from that scale ring out.

Yeah. the more I play with the Eminence speakers, the more I like them. Maybe sometime soon I can see how they work with some of my Broes's stuff. So far, with my Marshalls & my Randall, they're bad ass. With the Randall, I cant turn the bass up past 2:00

Im thinking they'd be great with an Orange or Matamp type of amp.

I wanna try them some time in a "normal" sized cabinet & see how they respond. I hate to admit it, but I think I like them more than I do my Mesa Black Shadow / MC-90 / Classic Lead 80 clones

I have 2x12 speakers in Marshall cabinet that is the same size as the straight 4x12 cab. It has some shitty McKenzie 50W speakers but it sounds HUGE compared to my Marshall 1966A 2x12 Celestion G12T-75 cab.

If it's a straight front cab, it should sound bigger than the angled cab.

McKinzie ... Arent those old Hiwatt copys? Dont see alot of those around

Who knows man. They are rare. Even on the internet there's little info. :? Anyway, I'm gonna replace the speaker baffle for 4x12 and put 4xV30 :headbang:

What you need to know about speakers is, there are primarily 3 different values of a speaker that you need in order to figure out what
it's resonation point is.
the Fs, Vas, and Qts.
THEN, you gotta know the golden rule of building enclosures..
1 cubic foot = 1728 cubic inches
Many, many different enclosure programs out there.
If you know the parameters of the speaker(s), you can build a killer enclosure.
Also, i've never, EVER heard a ported enclosure sound worth a fuck of guitar.
Bass, maybe... but all the port is doing is increasing the efficiency of the enclosure to
resonate that the specific frequency you've tuned it to.
So, this whole buisness of buying a ported enclosure off the shelf and throwing a pair of 12"s in it is pure HORSE SHIT.
I've built many, many, many enclosures, from sealed, to ported, to bandpass to 4th order isobaric.
You HAVE to know the parameters, or else you're just pissin' in the wind.
Also, if you're putting speakers into an enclosure that's got too much airspace for that type of speaker, you're going
to throw the volume to it and smoke it once that bitch over-extends.
I've done it, I've seen it done, I've done it for fun.
i've smoked more speakers for warranty purposes than most of you have seen.
(try 120v AC into a Rockford Power 12... 60hz hummmmmmmmmmmmmm...... smoke)
Smoked 24 of 'em right in a row to simply send them to Rockford and have them reconed.

BlauBox is a good prog.
There are several others.
Do your research and try it with a little knowledge, you'll get much better results.
