I remember you saying you have arthritis or carpal tunnel from playing with such heavy gauge strings. That's what I'm trying to avoid. If I can get a good tone by going down to 9's in standard tuning I may try it. It's not like I struggle with the 10's I use now, but any less tension may be a good thing for the hands/fingers.

yeah. Just last night, this carpal tunnel, or tennis elbow, whatever it is in my left elbow & forarm was driving me nuts. As mush as I hate to, I may have to go to a lower gauge. I'm gonna try wearing a brace before I do anything drastic.

Im not sure if its all from guitar, or if its something else. I just find it odd that its my left arm & Im right handed.

This chick I work with does massage therapy and she did some pressure points on my hand and forearm today and it fuckin felt great. She said "wow your hands are rock hard" and I'm like yeah I know 8)

One thing she said to do is heat up a bowl of uncooked rice in the microwave then stick your hand in and open and close your fist, then switch to a bowl that's been in the freezer. I put a lot of strain on my hands and fingers at work, picking up awkward heavy bags and shit, and I noticed a pain in my hand while bending strings on my bass a while ago so I'm trying to take better care of 'em.

You might wanna look up some hand massages and have your woman do em on you, or go to a massage place.

I wonder if this book has any good tips or if it's just a bunch of BS to get your money. I've seen it advertised before, but never seen and actual copy where I could flip through it before spending any dough on it.

Quote:
The Bassist's Guide to Injury Management, Prevention and Better Health by Dr.Randall Kertz

Written by a bass player for bass players, The Bassist’s Guide to Injury Management, Prevention and Better Health is designed to point out common and not so common problems that the musician may encounter during practice or performing situations. The injuries and conditions themselves are explained along with their prevention and treatment options. An easy to use symptom reference guide allows the reader to quickly look up the area of injury and find its source. A chapter of pro-tips offers advice and exercises from some of the top bassists in their field including Steve Bailey, David Ellefson, Putter Smith and Victor Wooten.

The Bassist’s Guide to Injury Management, Prevention and Better Health is a useful reference guide for the amateur and professional musician as well as the teacher, student or health care worker.

Yeah. I cant get into Ernie Ball strings. They break, rot, & rust. something in my body chemicals is VERY acidic. I can put on a brand new set of Erines..and the next day they're rusted. Within 4-5 days, they start breaking. They're also hard to stretch when trying to get tuned up after putting them on. They keep stretching. g-string...SNAP.. Somethings wrong when you snap 22 & 24 guage G-strings doing "Hendrix" bends.

Dude in town FINALLY started getting GHS Boomers in 12's & 13's. I bought a couple packs & put together a custom set a few weeks ago. I forgot how great GHS's were.

I used to like Rotosound strings. UK made goodies, (As far as Im concerned, ANY guitar stuff made in the UK is golden  ) but no one around here carries em any more.

Rotosound bass strings used to be pretty popular around here, but I always thought they sounded a little to bright to me. Switched to DR, but I have to order 'em.. but with price of bass strings so high, it's somehow cheaper to order them and pay for the shipping than buy them in a store. :|

never had a problem with Ernies balls.i always use em.sure they get manky after a while but what string doesn't?

I change up after about 3 weeks and never have any breakage.

I swapped to d'addarios once and hated em.too bright and trebly compared to Ernies.

Since my gear's all up my Uncle's house up the street now, I been ggoing up there of a night when I can & fuck around.

He's re-building his house so I got my shit in an empty room. NO HEAT.

That was something I thought of while I was up there last night..I forgot how much better GHS's are in a cold environment than other strings. My hands dont seem to fatigue as bad when Im using GHS's in the cold. Dont know if any of yall have ever practiced or played gigs in the cold or not, but a man who uses heavy strings is gonna feel it hard when he does. Ive noticed alot of strings dont take to the cold like GHS's.

These are the exact set that I use. I have tried every other strings, except the Rotosounds, and keep coming back to these. I don't leave them on the guitar long enough to get nasty, so that part doesn't bother me as much. They just don't break, which is my biggest problem. I'm very heavy handed. I'll break strings just trying to stretch them out sometimes.

Are they bright? Yes, they are. But then I guess that compensates a bit for me being tuned to A# with no treble on my amp at all.

On bass, I've uses D'addario XL for years and years and they were just great. Not too pricey, bright but not harsh and perfect for rock. When I switched to the Rickenbacker, though, I also switched strings. You have to go with rotosound, DR or rickenbacker strings: they sound so much better on those basses it's almost unbelieveble. Problem is, they're fucking expensive.

Luckily I'm a sloppy bastard and I go way too much without changing em :P

same. :P When I got my Squier and first started learning to play, I don't think I changed strings for two years. Didn't realize it was necessary, and I played a whole lot of Sabbath, so that dead muddy tone actually sounded pretty good. I changed strings and thought "What the fuck is this?"

Nothing like taken the strings off and seeing that mixture of sweat, oil, dead skin, and God knows what else caked on the fret board.
