After seeing Saint Vitus in Austin just a few weeks before (brag, brag, brag) I was having a hard time telling myself that I may not be able to afford a down ticket this go around. But you know how us metal heads are. We always have our priorities in order and good music and live shows come before any of that other bullshit like bills, kids, holding a job etc. So for my girlfriends birthday I got two tickets to the Down show at Backstage in San Antonio. Unfortunately the door guys were fucking nazis. Once we got to the door they patted us down and they found that everyone, (I was with 4 other down freaks) had cigarettes. We were informed that these were not allowed in the club and would have to be thrown away or put in our car which was a 4 or 5 block walk away. I think this may be the first metal concert I have ever been to that you literally could not smoke at, other than of course arena type shit. ANYWAY! Ponykiller was hated by pretty much everyone in the venue. The good part was that they didn't seem to give a flying fuck and never acknowledged any of the drunk asses heckling that was going on. They did a bad ass cover of a ween song but I didn't catch what the name of the song was. Solitude was a little bit better because their music was definately heavier than Ponykiller, but I still couldn't get into the vocals all that much. It seemed like people dug them a little bit more but the venue still wasn't really that full of people. Once Solitude were off the place started to fill up and we decided to try to go hide in the middle of the crowd somewhere so we could

.
Two joints later after I felt like I was in a fucking movie being filmed on Pluto, Down takes the stage and tears into Lysergic Funeral Procession. The whole place goes fucking apeshit. I was like 2 or 3 people from the front of the center stage and as far as I could tell the whole place turned into a pit. Fucking beautiful. Their setlist was ALLLLL HEAVY shit! lifer, swan song, pillamid, hail the leaf (song of the night in my opinion) of course they closed with bury me in smoke and she's buying a stairway to heaven. This will be I think the fourth time I've seen down live and probably the best I've ever seen them look and the best i've ever seen them play. The only shitty part about the San Antonio show was that the sound in the venue was FUCKING HORRIBLE. Phil didn't rant as much as he did back in the day, but he did talk a few times between songs but nobody could hear a fucking word he was saying. There was something up with the vocals and the guitars that just sounded fucked up with the sound that night. Im blaming the venue because I figured if it was a tech issue their sound guy would have been on that shit stat. Either way it was a phenomenal show from the guys as always. It really is mind blowing to see phil looking and acting like the vulgar display of power days. And to see all of them kicking so much ass is sooooooo refreshing for me in this world of ever so shitty music, movies, tv, etc. I'm not that guy that stands there the whole time filming and photoing with my camera phone so I have no footage for you guys but if they are coming to your city, make it happen. I think San Antonio was their first show and they KILLED that place......and they weren't even warmed up yet!
