Anybody here use em?

Been thinking of throwing a J-J set in my 5-string jazz. Its one of my very few options because my pickup routing is spaced weird. Benefits? Drawbacks? Success/horror stories?

A broe of mein has a bass w EMG' in it. Not sure which ones, but they sound great to me.

If they're like their guitar pickups, then Id say they were ok. I love my EMG's VERY versitile & good for ANY style

I have EMG on my Spector Euro 5-string bass and they are great pickups : very punchy with great low.

I've put a P/J set on my 80's Ibanez four string bass and they are great too. But beware of something when you replace pickups with EMG : the company doesn't put enough wire in their sets.

I really don't like EMG's, but it's just a matter of personal taste. I would never say they're cheaply built or something like that, I just don't like the sound. For some reason they sound too compressed to me. I've always been in love with Seymour Duncan, they sound more dynamic and less punchy. But then, I haven't tried all models produced by EMG, I might find one that makes me fall in love :P

He pretty much nailed it, they are more compressed and punchy. I just bought a Spector Euro 4lx and it has emg pj's in them and frankly I am IN LOVE with the sound. There very thick and bouncy and the highs and mids are not harsh in anyway and last night at practice they fit so well in the mix. It cut through nicely but not obnoxiously standoutish, and still filled the role of what a bass player should. Its up to you and you'll find whats most pleasing to your ear, but as paranoid said, emgs are more punchy/ rounded in your faceish and passives(be it duncan or whomever) are more open and "dynamic"

Think I might just stick with the stock pickups. At least until I have a bunch of cash lying around and just wanna try shit for fun. The stock ones in here have a nice "grind" to them that makes it cut through really well while still bringing a nice full low end.
